About this Sacred Grove

Asur Sivan Selliamman Sacred Grove, covering 1.6 ha, is located at Asur village, Veppanthattai Taluk, Perambalur District, Tamil Nadu. Dedicated to Goddess Selliamman and Lord Sivan, worship is performed regularly, especially during Aadi and annual festivals for protection, health and prosperity. The grove is maintained and protected by the local community through strict traditional taboos prohibiting cutting of trees, removal of biomass, hunting and grazing. It is believed that any violation will invite misfortune and the wrath of the deity. This traditional conservation ethic has ensured protection of dry deciduous vegetation, native species and associated biodiversity, making it an important ecological and cultural heritage site.
