About this Sacred Grove
Athikadavu Bhavani Mariyamman Sacred Grove is located at Athikadavu, Mettupalayam Taluk, Coimbatore District, Tamil Nadu. Dedicated to Goddess Bhavani Mariyamman, the goddess of rain and health, the grove is revered as her sacred abode on the banks of River Bhavani. Folklore says Mariyamman protected villagers from floods, epidemics and evil spirits, appearing in dreams to village elders. After miraculous cures and safe river crossings, her stone idol was installed under the dense grove. Since then, she is worshipped for good rainfall, cure from pox diseases, child welfare and river prosperity. Cutting trees, polluting water or entering impure inside is strictly taboo, and the grove is preserved through faith and annual Adi and Panguni festivals.
