About this Sacred Grove

Biring Kaali Ma sacred grove is located 10km away from Pakyong in East Sikkim. Biring is further
divided into upper and lower Biring by a road that cuts it into two halves. The sacred grove is
located at Upper Biring and falls under tropical semi-evergreen and sub-tropical broad leaved
hill forest.
In Biring, the places where water sources such as stream or springs are located in forested area are
said to be inhabited by Devi itself. Thereafter the area is marked and worshipped as a Devithan.
A Devithan is believed to exist from the point of first settlement of a village. This relationship shows
how the establishment of Devithans is critical to the construction of the history of locality for the
Nepalis in Biring. Devithans indicate a clan or family’s history of settlement.
