About this Sacred Grove

Chinnamanur Durgai Amman Sacred Grove is a 2.2 ha sacred patch located in Chinnamanur, Theni District, Tamil Nadu, dedicated to the fierce and protective Goddess Durgai Amman, worshipped as the guardian of the town from evil, disease and natural calamities. Believed to be a self-manifested deity residing on the banks of River Vaigai, the Goddess commands deep reverence, and the surrounding grove is strictly protected by local belief that no branch should be cut. This riverside grove represents a rich riparian ecosystem dominated by large old trees like Arjun tree, Cluster Fig, Mango, Cannonball Tree, Banyan and Indian Ash Tree. The dense canopy and proximity to Vaigai River provide a cool microclimate, prevent riverbank erosion, conserve groundwater and support a variety of birds, bats, and small mammals. The trees also hold high cultural and medicinal value and are associated with temple rituals. The annual Adi and Navratri festivals with Pongal offerings strengthen community custodianship. Chinnamanur Durgai Amman grove is a fine example of traditional conservation where faith, river ecology and biodiversity are intertwined and safeguarded by local people.
