About this Sacred Grove
Devadanapatti Moongilanai Kamatchi is a revered local deity in Theni district, Tamil Nadu. The temple and its associated myths reflect the deep-rooted cultural and spiritual beliefs of the region. The villagers are predominantly farmers and long ago, when the village of Devadanapatti was plagued by drought and famine the villagers desperately prayed for relief. An elderly woman in the village had a divine dream and she shared her dream with the villagers that the goddess Kamatchi appeared and instructed her to visit a specific spot in the nearby forest where a sacred neem tree (known as Moongilanai) stood. The goddess revealed that she resided under that tree and promised to bless the village with prosperity if the villagers worshipped her there. They all gathered and went to the forest, where they found the neem tree and when they dug under the tree, they discovered a small idol of Kamatchi. Overjoyed, they brought the idol back to the village and built a small shrine for her. As soon as they started worshipping Moongilanai Kamatchi, rains returned to the village, crops flourished, and the village prospered.
