About this Sacred Grove
Eramarpatti Murugan Temple is a revered hillock shrine in Eramarpatti village, Madurai District, Tamil Nadu. Lord Murugan is worshipped here as the divine warrior and protector of the village youth and fields. Legend says a cowherd boy grazing cattle on the small hillock found his cow pouring milk automatically over a Vel-shaped stone hidden under a dense grove of Vagai and Neem trees. He informed the villagers, and that night an elder dreamt of a youthful figure with Vel, peacock and six faces, declaring that he resides on the hillock to guard Eramarpatti. A temple was built at that spot and the surrounding grove was preserved as sacred. No wood is cut from it. It is believed Murugan blesses the village with courage, good harvest and protection from evil, and devotees offer milk abhishekam and Kavadi during Panguni Uthiram for fulfilment of vows.
