About this Sacred Grove

Karaipadi Semmalaiyappa Sacred Grove, covering 2.1 ha, is located at Karaipadi village, Perambalur District, Tamil Nadu. Dedicated to Lord Semmalaiyappa, worship is performed regularly with special pujas during festivals and auspicious days for protection, health and prosperity. The grove is protected and maintained by the local community through strict traditional taboos prohibiting felling of trees, removal of biomass, hunting and grazing. It is believed that any harm to the grove invites the wrath of the deity and brings misfortune. This deep-rooted reverence has ensured conservation of dry deciduous vegetation, native tree species and associated biodiversity, serving as an important ecological and cultural refuge.
