About this Sacred Grove

Karamanikuppam Aiyanar Sacred Grove is located at Karamanikuppam village, Kurinjipadi Taluk, Cuddalore District. This is believed to be a guardian grove dedicated to Aiyanar, the kaval deivam of the village. According to folk tale, Aiyanar came on horseback from the eastern forest to save villagers from evil spirits and crop loss, and chose the dense grove under a large banyan tree as his abode. Aiyanar with his consorts Poorani and Porkalai is the main deity and Karuppasamy, Muniswaran, Veeran, Pechi and Saptha Kanniga are subordinate deities. The annual festival is in Aadi (July-August). Devotees offer terracotta horses for vows, cook pongal and perform special abhishekam. People believe Aiyanar protects the boundary, cures illness and brings good monsoon and harvest.
