About this Sacred Grove

Karampatti Bagavathi Amman, Selli Amman and Karuppasamy Temple is the powerful triple-deity sacred grove of Karampatti village, Madurai District. Bagavathi and Selli Amman are worshipped as fierce mother goddesses, with Karuppasamy as their guardian. Legend says three sisters travelling to protect the village took shelter in a dense Tamarind and Neem grove, while their brother Karuppasamy stood guard with a billhook. A hunter saw flames in the grove at night and found three stones smeared with turmeric and a tall stone of Karuppasamy. Villagers built a shrine there and preserved the grove as sacred, where no branch is cut.It is believed the two Ammans cure diseases and grant child boon, while Karuppasamy patrols on his horse at night, dispensing justice and protecting the village from evil and theft.
