About this Sacred Grove

Kavanur Kali Amman / Aiyanar is a revered deity pair in the village of Kavanur, Ramanathapuram District. Kali Amman is known as the fierce mother and destroyer of evil, and Aiyanar as guardian of the village and deity of justice and protection. His tales highlight valor, wisdom, and divine intervention in times of need. According to legend, a powerful and vengeful spirit, known as Karkodan, had taken residence in the nearby forest. Karkodan would cause harm to the villagers, creating disturbances, attacking cattle, damaging crops, and bringing misfortune and disease. The villagers, plagued by Karkodan's malevolence, sought Kali Amman and Aiyanar's help. They performed a special ritual at their shrine in the grove and Kali Amman, in her fierce divine form, along with Aiyanar riding on horse, descended into the forest where Karkodan resided. They fought valiantly and after a prolonged struggle, managed to vanquish Karkodan and banish the spirit from the land. The villagers celebrated their victory with a grand festival, expressing gratitude for protection and bravery. The story of their battle became a symbol of divine power and guardian role against evil. The 2.1 ha sacred grove is their powerful abode.
