About this Sacred Grove

Kolakkanatham Pachaiyamman Sacred Grove, covering 1.8 ha, is located at Kolakkanatham village, Veppanthattai Taluk, Perambalur District, Tamil Nadu. Dedicated to Goddess Pachaiyamman, worship is performed regularly, especially during the Tamil month of Aadi and village festivals for health, rain and prosperity. The grove is protected and maintained by the local community through strict traditional taboos that prohibit tree felling, removal of biomass and entry during certain periods. It is believed that any violation would invite the wrath of the Goddess and bring misfortune. This reverence has helped conserve dry deciduous vegetation, native flora and fauna, making it a vital biodiversity and cultural site.
