About this Sacred Grove

Kolakkanatham Puliyadiyan Sacred Grove, covering 1.2 ha, is located at Kolakkanatham village, Veppanthattai Taluk, Perambalur District, Tamil Nadu. Dedicated to Lord Puliyadiyan, a folk guardian deity, occasional pujas and annual festivals are performed by the local community for protection and fulfillment of wishes. The grove is maintained with strict traditional taboos prohibiting tree cutting, hunting and removal of any produce, rooted in the belief that harming the sacred grove will bring misfortune and anger of the deity. This traditional conservation has preserved dry deciduous vegetation, native species and associated biodiversity, making it an important local ecological refuge.
