About this Sacred Grove

Kottarai Karuppasami Sacred Grove, covering 2.1 ha, is located at Kottarai village, Perambalur District, Tamil Nadu. Dedicated to Lord Karuppasami, a guardian deity, occasional pujas and annual festivals are conducted by villagers seeking protection, good harvest and fulfillment of wishes. The grove is maintained and protected by the local community through strict traditional taboos prohibiting cutting of trees, removal of produce and hunting, with belief that any violation brings misfortune and anger of the deity. This traditional protection has helped conserve dry deciduous vegetation, native tree species and associated biodiversity, serving as an important ecological and cultural refuge.
