About this Sacred Grove

Kottarai Periyaswami Sacred Grove, covering 2.7 ha, is located at Kottarai village, Perambalur District, Tamil Nadu. Dedicated to Lord Periyaswami, worship is performed regularly with special pujas during Maha Shivaratri and other auspicious occasions for protection and well-being.The grove is maintained and protected by the local community through strict traditional taboos prohibiting tree felling, removal of biomass and hunting. It is believed that any violation will invite the wrath of the deity and bring misfortune to the violator. This deep-rooted faith has ensured conservation of dry deciduous vegetation, native flora, medicinal plants and associated fauna, making it an important biodiversity refuge and cultural site.
