About this Sacred Grove

Kovilpalayam Aiyanar Sacred Grove is located at Kovilpalayam village, Perambalur District, Tamil Nadu. Dedicated to Lord Aiyanar, the guardian deity of the village, worship is performed regularly with special pujas during festivals and auspicious days for protection, good harvest and prosperity. The grove is maintained and protected by the local community through strict traditional taboos prohibiting cutting of trees, removal of biomass, hunting and entry during certain times. Belief that any violation brings misfortune and invites the wrath of Lord Aiyanar ensures its conservation. This traditional ethic has preserved dry deciduous vegetation, native flora, medicinal plants and associated fauna, making it an important biodiversity refuge and cultural heritage site.
