About this Sacred Grove

Kulathur Thandavarayan Sacred Grove, covering 2.2 ha, is located at Kulathur village, Perambalur District, Tamil Nadu. Dedicated to Lord Thandavarayan, worship is performed regularly with special pujas during festivals and auspicious days. The grove is protected and maintained by the local community through strict traditional taboos that prohibit felling of trees, removal of biomass, hunting and entry at certain times. It is believed that any harm to the grove invites misfortune and the wrath of the deity. This deep reverence has ensured conservation of dry deciduous vegetation, medicinal plants and associated fauna, making it an important biodiversity and cultural heritage site.
