About this Sacred Grove

Kunnam Aiyanar Sacred Grove is located at Kunnam village, Kunnam Taluk, Perambalur District, Tamil Nadu. Dedicated to Lord Aiyanar, the guardian deity of the village, pujas are performed regularly with special worship during festivals for protection, good harvest and prosperity. The grove is maintained and protected by the local community through strict traditional taboos prohibiting cutting of trees, removal of produce, hunting and entry during certain times. Belief that harming the grove brings misfortune and invites the wrath of Aiyanar ensures its conservation. This traditional protection has preserved dry deciduous vegetation, native tree species and associated biodiversity, serving as an important ecological and cultural heritage site.
