About this Sacred Grove
Mahizhi-Vaazh Muneeswaran Sacred Grove, Nagapattinam - Nestled in Mahizhi village near Vaazh, Nagapattinam, this is an ancient kavu dedicated to Lord Muneeswaran, the fierce guardian deity of the village. Local legend says Muneeswaran appeared under a Mahizhi tree to protect villagers from sea storms, evil spirits and black magic, patrolling the border at night with his dog vahana. Worshipped as kaval deivam, he ensures safe fishing, good harvest, cattle safety and family protection. Fishermen pray before entering sea. The grove preserves native trees, nagas and medicinal plants as sacred, never cut for fear of dosha. Pongal, cigar, lemon garland poojas on Tuesdays and Fridays keep faith and coastal biodiversity alive through generations.
