About this Sacred Grove

Mettupalayam Kallukadaimedu Aiyanar Sacred Grove is located at Mettupalayam village, near Virudhachalam, Cuddalore District. This is believed to be a guardian grove, dedicated to Aiyanar, the village protector. According to folklore, Aiyanar came riding his white horse from the forest to protect villagers from evil spirits and crop theft, and settled permanently in this grove with his two consorts Poorani and Porkalai. Aiyanar is the main deity and Karuppasamy, Veeran, Madurai Veeran and Saptha Kanniga are the subordinate deities. The annual festival is celebrated in the month of Chithirai (April-May). People offer terracotta horses for fulfilment of vows, sacrifice goats and cook pongal. People believe Aiyanar protects the village boundary, prevents diseases and ensures good harvest.
