About this Sacred Grove
Spread over 3.1 hectares in Mohanur, Namakkal district, near Cauvery river, this sacred kavu is dedicated to Kaaliyamman, the fierce mother goddess. Worshipped as river guardian and village protector, she saves villagers from floods, epidemics, evil spirits and crop failure. Local belief says Kaali emerged from riverbed to stop plague and protect fisherfolk and farmers. Women pray for child welfare, family health, removal of evil eye and safe delivery. The dense grove preserves huge trees, neem, medicinal plants, birds and snakes as sacred, never cut due to goddess curse. Aadi month, Navaratri and full-moon poojas with pongal, lime garlands and kumkum offerings attract devotees. It shows how Amman worship conserves riverine biodiversity and traditional ecological wisdom.
