About this Sacred Grove

Spread over 3.1 hectares in Mohanur, Namakkal district, on Cauvery riverbank, this sacred kavu is dedicated to Navaladiyaan Karuppannaswamy, the unique naval tree guardian form of Karuppu. Worshipped as river and village protector, he guards farmlands, fisherfolk, cattle and travellers from floods, evil spirits, theft and black magic. Local legend says Karuppu resides under ancient naval (jamun) tree near river and appears riding horse at night. Villagers pray for cattle safety, good harvest, legal victory and protection from drowning. The dense grove preserves huge naval trees, native species, medicinal plants, birds and bats as sacred, strictly protected from cutting. Midnight poojas with cigar, pongal and animal votives on Amavasya sustain Kongu faith-based riparian biodiversity conservation tradition.
