About this Sacred Grove
Narayanathevanpatti Sellayi Amman Sacred Grove is a 2.8 ha culturally and ecologically significant grove located in Narayanathevanpatti Village, Theni District, Tamil Nadu, dedicated to the revered village Goddess Sellayi Amman, believed to be the embodiment of Shakti and the protector of the community from diseases, drought and evil forces. According to local belief, the Goddess self-manifested in this patch and has been worshipped for generations as the guardian of village boundaries and fertility of agricultural lands, and hence the grove is strictly protected by customary taboos against tree felling and hunting. The grove represents a well-preserved dry deciduous patch dominated by ecologically and medicinally important species like Neem, Aalamaram, Nelli and Tamarind. These large old trees with dense canopy provide nesting and roosting habitat for birds, bats and small mammals, conserve soil moisture, and act as a vital gene pool for native species in the agrarian landscape of Theni. The annual Adi festival and regular Pongal offerings reinforce community participation in its conservation, making it an excellent example of biodiversity conservation through traditional faith.
