About this Sacred Grove

The Norbugang sacred grove is located in West Sikkim district at 200m away from Yuksam town. The
Archeological Survey of India (ASI) lists this sacred grove, having an area of 0.7 ha, as important
historical site. Norbugang in Yuksam is known as the Coronation Throne. The Norbugang sacred grove in
Bhutia language is also signifies as sacred/precious hill (Norbu: sacred/precious, gang: hill). It is the
place where the three senior saints (namely; Lama Lhatsun Namkha Jigmee, Lama Ngadak Sempa
Chenpo and Lama Kartok Kunto Zangpo- the 9th Century Buddhist saints) crowned the first King of Sikkim Chogyal Phuntsok Namgyal in the year 1642.
Therefore, the entire area was named as Yuksam in Lepcha language (Yuk: superior, sam: three) which
was derived from the auspicious meeting of the three superior Buddhist saints. The sacred grove comprises
of the stupa, prayer hall, large prayer wheel and an archaic stone built coronation throne set below the
large Cupressus funebris tree.
