About this Sacred Grove

Olapadi Thangamuthukaruppu Sacred Grove, covering 1.5 ha, is located at Olapadi village, Perambalur District, Tamil Nadu. Dedicated to Lord Thangamuthukaruppu, worship is performed regularly with special pujas during festivals for protection, fulfillment of wishes and prosperity. The grove is protected and maintained by the local community through strict traditional taboos prohibiting cutting of trees, removal of biomass, hunting and grazing. It is believed that any violation invites the wrath of the deity and brings misfortune. This traditional conservation practice has ensured preservation of dry deciduous vegetation, native flora and associated fauna, serving as an important biodiversity and cultural refuge.
