About this Sacred Grove
Pimbalur Kamatchi Amman Sacred Grove, covering 5.3 ha, is located at Pimbalur village, Perambalur District, Tamil Nadu. Dedicated to Goddess Kamatchi Amman, worship is performed regularly with special pujas during Navratri and annual festivals for protection, fertility and prosperity. The grove is maintained and protected by the local community through strict traditional taboos prohibiting felling of trees, removal of biomass, hunting and grazing. Belief that any harm to the grove invites the wrath of the Goddess and brings misfortune ensures its conservation. This traditional practice has preserved dry deciduous vegetation, native tree species and associated biodiversity, making it a significant ecological and cultural refuge in the district.
