About this Sacred Grove

Pimbalur Selliyamman Sacred Grove, covering 1.7 ha, is located at Pimbalur village, Perambalur District, Tamil Nadu. Dedicated to Goddess Selliyamman, worship is performed regularly with special pujas during Aadi festival and other auspicious days for health, protection and well-being. The grove is protected and maintained by the local community through strict traditional taboos prohibiting cutting of trees, removal of biomass, hunting and grazing. It is believed that any violation brings misfortune and invites the wrath of the Goddess. This deep-rooted reverence has conserved dry deciduous vegetation, native species and associated fauna, serving as an important biodiversity refuge and cultural heritage site.
