About this Sacred Grove
Poombuhar Perumal Thottam Veeranar Sacred Grove, Mayiladuthurai - Spread over 1.3 hectares in Perumal Thottam near Poompuhar, this is a traditional kavu dedicated to Lord Veeranar (Ayyanar), the powerful guardian deity of the village and coast. Worshipped as the protector of land, fishermen, crops and cattle from evil spirits, sea dangers and natural calamities, the grove preserves ancient trees, medicinal plants, snakes and birds as part of worship. Villagers believe disturbing the grove brings dosha, while protecting it ensures rain, good fish catch, harvest and family welfare.
