About this Sacred Grove

Pungankulam Ponthupuli Karuppasami and Aiyanar are worshipped as the twin guardian deities of Pungankulam village in Thirumangalam Taluk, Madurai District, Tamil Nadu. Aiyanar is revered as the righteous protector of Dharma who guards the village boundaries on horseback, while Ponthupuli Karuppasami is his fierce lieutenant, known for his swift justice and fearless protection. The name 'Ponthupuli' holds a unique local legend. It is said that a tiger (Puli) used to frequent the grove near the village tank, frightening cattle and shepherds. One day, the tiger chased a shepherd boy into the dense grove. The boy prayed to Karuppasami for protection. Suddenly, a tall, dark warrior figure with a mighty aruval and glowing eyes appeared and tamed the tiger. The tiger lay down like a pet at his feet, with a hole (Ponthu) in its ear as a mark of his control. From that day, the deity came to be known as Ponthupuli Karuppasami - the one who made the tiger his vehicle. When villagers searched the grove, they found ancient stone idols of Aiyanar and Karuppasami under a large Pungan tree (Pungam), along with terracotta horses.The sacred grove is still preserved untouched. Villagers believe that Aiyanar and Ponthupuli Karuppasami patrol the village together at night, with the tiger walking beside them, ensuring protection, good harvest and justice for Pungankulam.
