About this Sacred Grove
Sathangudi Aiyanar Temple is one of the most ancient and revered shrines of Sathangudi village in Melur Taluk, Madurai District, Tamil Nadu. Aiyanar is worshipped as the supreme guardian and Dharma protector of the village, who protects its boundaries, cattle and people from evil forces. As per the village legend, Sathangudi Aiyanar was the first deity to settle in the village. Elders narrate that long ago, when the village was newly formed, hunters who went into the forest saw a tall, majestic figure in royal attire, riding a white horse and holding a sword, accompanied by hunting dogs. The figure disappeared into a dense grove of Neem and Banyan trees. When the hunters went inside, they found a majestic stone idol of Aiyanar along with Karuppasami and Bhairava. The villagers built a shrine at that very spot and began worshipping him as their Kaval Deivam. The grove around the temple was declared sacred and is preserved to this day - no tree is felled and no hunting is allowed inside. It is believed that Aiyanar patrols the village every night on his white horse with his retinue, ensuring peace and justice. During festivals, terracotta horses are offered to him as a symbol of his divine ride, and it is strongly believed that he continues to guard Sathangudi and grant prosperity and protection to all devotees.
