About this Sacred Grove
Sathangudi Kottai Karuppu is worshipped as a fierce and vigilant guardian deity of Sathangudi village in Melur Taluk, Madurai District, Tamil Nadu. Kottai Karuppu, meaning the Black Guardian of the Fort, is believed to be the protector of the old village fort boundary and is revered for his uncompromising justice and boundless strength. According to village lore, Sathangudi was once surrounded by a small mud fort to protect it from invaders and wild animals. One night, the fort guard had a vivid dream of a dark, towering figure dressed as a warrior, wearing black attire, holding a long aruval (sickle) and a chain, patrolling the fort walls on horseback. He declared that he was Kottai Karuppu and had been guarding the fort and the village for generations from an old grove near the fort's entrance. The villagers went to the spot and found a ferocious-looking stone idol smeared with black soot and vermillion under a dense grove of Vagai and Neem trees. They immediately built a shrine and started offering Pongal, cigar and sacrificial worship. The sacred grove of Kottai Karuppu is strictly protected even today. No wood is cut and no one enters the grove with footwear. It is strongly believed that Kottai Karuppu still rides around the village at night, protecting its people, cattle and crops from evil and ensuring justice.
