About this Sacred Grove

Sathangudi Pattarai Kulam Vinayagar is worshipped as the remover of obstacles and guardian of the sacred tank of Sathangudi village, Melur Taluk, Madurai District. According to local lore, when villagers dug the Pattarai Kulam (workshop tank) near the blacksmithy to store water for cattle and cultivation, their spade struck a natural stone shaped like Vinayagar. The blacksmith had a dream that Lord Ganesha wished to reside on the tank bund to protect the water and the village from drought and misfortune. A small shrine was built under a large Peepal and Neem grove on the tank bund. The grove is preserved as sacred, no wood is cut. It is believed Vinayagar guards the kulam, ensures water never dries and grants success and prosperity to all who pray before starting any work.
