About this Sacred Grove

Sathangudi Valaguru Nathar and Easwari Temple is an ancient shrine of Sathangudi village, Melur Taluk, Madurai District, dedicated to Lord Shiva as Valaguru Nathar and Goddess Parvati as Easwari. Legend says a Siddha named Valaguru performed penance under a dense grove of Vilva trees near the village. Pleased by his austerity, Lord Shiva appeared as a self-manifested Lingam entwined by a Vilva root, with Goddess Easwari beside him.The villagers built a temple around the Lingam and preserved the surrounding Vilva and Neem grove as sacred. No leaf is plucked without prayer. It is believed the grove retains the Siddha's spiritual power. Devotees offer Vilva leaves and prayers for wisdom, health and family welfare, and it is said that Valaguru Nathar and Easwari bless Sathangudi with peace, rain and prosperity.
