About this Sacred Grove

Sathankudi Badrakaliyamman is the fierce and compassionate mother goddess of Sathankudi village, Thirumangalam Taluk, Madurai District. Badrakali is worshipped as the destroyer of evil and protector of Dharma. Legend says a farmer ploughing near the village boundary found his plough struck by a stone idol bleeding. That night the Goddess appeared in his dream as a black figure with fiery eyes, wearing a garland of lemons, ordering a shrine under the nearby grove. Villagers installed her there. The surrounding Vagai and Neem grove is kept sacred and untouched. It is believed Badrakaliyamman still guards the village entrance, driving away evil spirits and disease, and grants courage, justice and prosperity to devotees who offer Pongal and lemon garlands.
