About this Sacred Grove

Sathanur Karuppasami Sacred Grove, covering 2.1 ha, is located at Sathanur village, Alathur Taluk, Perambalur District, Tamil Nadu. Dedicated to Lord Karuppasami, a guardian deity, puja is performed occasionally, mainly during festivals and auspicious occasions for protection and fulfillment of wishes. The grove is maintained by the local community with strict taboos prohibiting cutting of trees, hunting and removal of any produce, rooted in the belief that harming the grove brings misfortune and anger of the deity. This traditional protection has conserved dry deciduous vegetation and native biodiversity, serving as an important ecological refuge.
