About this Sacred Grove
Spread over 1.8 hectares in Semmantappatti, Namakkal district, this sacred kavu is dedicated to Mariamman, the powerful rain and disease protector goddess. Worshipped as mother of health and fertility, she guards villagers, children and cattle from smallpox, epidemics, evil eye and drought. Local belief says Mariamman appeared in forest during plague to cool disease and bring rain. Women pray for child health, family wellness, good monsoon and cure from fevers. The dense grove preserves neem, tamarind, medicinal plants, birds and small wildlife as sacred, never cut as it holds goddess power. Aadi festival, Tuesdays and Fridays poojas with pongal, turmeric, neem leaves and fire-walking attract villagers. It represents Kongu folk tradition where Mariamman worship links health protection with sacred grove biodiversity.
