About this Sacred Grove
Thoruvalur Muthu Irulayi / Karuppannasami / Kali is a revered deity complex in the village of Thoruvalur, Ramanathapuram District. Muthu Irulayi is known as the mother of dark protection, Karuppasami as fierce guardian of justice, and Kali as destroyer of evil, together protecting the village boundary. According to legend, a powerful and vengeful spirit, known as Maya Pei, had taken residence in the nearby forest of Thoruvalur. Maya Pei would cause harm to the villagers, creating disturbances, possessing people, damaging crops, and bringing drought and misfortune. The villagers, plagued by Maya Pei's malevolence, sought the help of Muthu Irulayi. They performed a special ritual at her shrine in the grove and Muthu Irulayi, along with Karuppasami and Kali in their divine forms, descended into the forest where Maya Pei resided. The three deities fought valiantly and after a prolonged struggle, they managed to vanquish Maya Pei and banish the spirit from the land, locking it under a neem tree. The villagers celebrated their victory with a grand festival, expressing gratitude for their protection and bravery. The story of their battle became a symbol of divine power. The 2.1 ha sacred grove is their fierce abode, protected with taboo that cutting trees will invite deity anger.
