About this Sacred Grove
Villagers believe that during the Sangam period, this Kollimalai was Sathuragiri Hills. Kollimalai is hence called as Aramalai and Dharma God himself has manifested as Kollimalai. Here, Lord Shiva is seen in the form of a Suyambu Lingam and considered as one of the important temples of the region. Large numbers of devotees visit the temple on all the days and have become locally an important tourist spot for the people. The inhabitants believe that the Lord inhabited in a small fish of the stream and thus the temple is otherwise known as the Fish temple. A common custom of the local people to fulfil vows is to catch the fish by hand and adorn them with gold or silver nose rings. The temple dates back to the 2nd century A.D. and was in existence during the reign of the King Val Vil Ori (one of the seven last heroes of the Sangam age). Later, the great Saivaite saint, Appar had sung in praise of Lord of Arapaleeswarar. This temple is held in high regard by the tribes of this region.
