About this Sacred Grove

Spread over 2.2 hectares in Yadapukadu, Namakkal district, this sacred kavu is dedicated to Puliyappan, the unique leopard-riding guardian deity of Kongu forests. Worshipped as vana kaval deivam, he protects forest dwellers, shepherds, cattle and farmlands from wild animals, theft and evil spirits. Local legend says Puliyappan tames tigers and leopards and guards hill borders at night. Tribal and village people pray for cattle safety, safe grazing, good honey collection and protection from forest dangers. The dense grove preserves huge ancient trees, medicinal plants, leopards, deer and birds as sacred, strictly protected from felling. Annual harvest festivals and pongal poojas with animal votives sustain faith-based forest conservation tradition.
