About this Sacred Grove
Yercaud Kaliamman Temple is a revered mother goddess shrine in Yercaud hills, Salem District, known as guardian of hills, protector from evil and deity of health and fertility. According to legend, a powerful vengeful spirit named Karuppan had taken residence in nearby shola forest, causing harm to villagers, attacking cattle, damaging crops and bringing illness. Villagers plagued by its malevolence sought Kaliamman's help and performed special ritual at Her shrine in the grove. Kaliamman in fierce divine form descended into forest, fought valiantly and after prolonged struggle vanquished and banished the spirit. Villagers celebrated Her victory with grand festival. The 1.8 ha sacred grove is Her powerful abode protected by strong taboo against tree felling. It contains a perennial hill spring serving as vital water source for wildlife and villagers, and supports rich biodiversity with pongam trees, banyan, harboring sambar, barking deer, civets, peafowl, hornbills and medicinal plants preserved due to faith.
